Google reactivates the indexing request feature in the URL inspection tool of Search Console, after having disabled it for several months. This function allows individual pages to be manually submitted for indexing, but Google specifies that it should only be used in specific situations. For the majority of cases, natural crawling remains the preferred path — and that’s where the issue lies.

The manual request is just a weak signal saying, ‘look at this page now,’ but it guarantees neither indexing nor speed.
When does this manual request really make sense?
Google talks about specific situations without providing an exhaustive list. In practice, legitimate use cases can be counted on one hand: urgent correction of a visible error in SERPs, publication of time-sensitive content (hot news), or page migration requiring quick reindexing.
For everything else — which constitutes 95% of cases — natural crawling does the job. Manually submitting each new URL is a matter of SEO superstition, not strategy. If Googlebot does not naturally find your pages, you have a structural crawlability issue, not a submission problem.
What really happens when you click this button?
The indexing request adds the URL to a priority queue, but priority does not mean immediate. Based on field observations, the delay varies from a few minutes to several days — exactly like without the request, sometimes.
Google has been very clear in the past: this function does not bypass quality criteria, canonicalization rules, or crawl quotas. A page eligible for indexing will end up indexed anyway. There are a few documented cases where the function allowed indexing in minutes — but it's impossible to know if it was due to the request or simply because Googlebot happened to be crawling at that time. First trap: submitting duplicate pages or canonicalized to another URL. Google will ignore them anyway, and you’re wasting your time. When to use this function without wasting your time?
Reserve the manual indexing request for cases where timing is critical and you cannot wait for natural crawling. Example: you’ve published a press release related to hot news and you want Google to see it within the hour. Or you’ve corrected a factual error on a page already indexed and visible in SERPs.
For everything else — new blog pages, product listings, categories — let natural crawling via sitemap and internal linking do its job. If your pages are not indexed within 48-72 hours, the problem lies elsewhere: crawl depth, content quality, duplicates, canonicalization, or crawl budget saturation.
How to diagnose if the problem really comes from crawling?
Before spamming the indexing request, check three things in Search Console. First: is the URL discovered but not crawled? If so, it’s a prioritization issue — improving internal linking might suffice. Second: is the URL crawled but marked as duplicate or canonicalized? If so, revisit your canonical strategy.
Third: does Googlebot encounter server errors (5xx) or timeouts when trying to crawl your pages? If yes, the problem is technical — no manual request will resolve it. Server logs are your best friend here: check if Googlebot is visiting, how often, and with what response codes.
What errors should you absolutely avoid with this tool?
First classic error: submitting URLs with parameters (session ID, UTM tracking, etc.) instead of the clean canonical URL. Google will ignore them or canonicalize them — and you will have wasted a request. Second error: submitting pages still in noindex or blocked by robots.txt. Search Console will flag this, but some SEOs still click anyway.
Third error: using the manual request as a substitute for a dynamic XML sitemap. If you regularly publish new content, automate via sitemap — that’s what it’s designed for. Manually submitting 50 URLs a week is a waste of time. And it’s likely counterproductive: Google might interpret this volume as spam and throttle your requests.

- Confirm the URL is the canonical version — not a variant with parameters or session ID
- Use the function only for urgent cases — max 5-10 URLs per week, no more
